Back to Basics with Zinc Oxide

Back to Basics with Zinc Oxide

The new year is here and it’s time to refresh, revamp, and revitalize our skin care routines. As we clean out our vanities and get back to the basics of skin care, it’s important to have a deeper understanding of the ingredients in your cosmetics. In this blog, we’re discussing one of the most-used ingredients in our makeup line and our basic go-to ingredient, Zinc Oxide.

What is Zinc Oxide?

Zinc Oxide is a fine, white powdery substance that is used as an additive in almost every makeup product we formulate. It is commonly found in sunscreens, in antiseptic ointments, and is recognized by the FDA as a safe and effective substance. Extensive research has been done to show it is safe to use in cosmetics.

Why use Zinc in Makeup?

Zinc Oxide has a wide array of benefits in our makeup, from formula creation to skin benefits.

It acts as a slight bulking agent when mixed with minerals and other ingredients to create a luxuriously soft texture and it has antibacterial properties that increase the shelf life of your makeup. These antibacterial properties are also an added benefit to your skin as they help protect from bacteria and reduce any secondary infections to blemishes or acne blemishes

Zinc Oxide is non-allergenic and non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t irritate skin or clog pores. It is actually known to do the opposite: to ease irritation and soothe the skin. It is a key ingredient to most acne treatments that support calming inflammation and reducing redness in acne prone skin

It has preventive properties, too! Zinc Oxide creates a barrier on your skin, protecting your face and body from the outdoor elements and UV rays. There’s also evidence that Zinc Oxide helps to seal moisture in your skin, leaving it fresh and tight helping to mitigate wrinkles and fine lines. This also helps battle dry skin, especially in the winter months.

How Much Zinc Should Be in Makeup?

We use a micronized  Zinc Oxide and keep our concentrations balanced to ensure proper protection, without overbearing the formula. You won’t ever feel that you can “see” the white tint of the Zinc Oxide on your skin. The perfect mix is dependent on the type of product, liquid or loose mineral, and the coloring of the product.

Back to Basics with Foundations

Zinc Oxide is a key ingredient in all of our foundations. From our Award-Winning Loose Mineral Foundation to our brand-new Liquid Zinc Foundation, finding the right foundation for your skin can be as simple as trying out sample sizes, emailing us, or talking with your dermatologist or skin care expert. Let’s get back to basics and be kind to our skin this year!
